Sodium-Potassium Pump

Cells spend a large share of their energy on the sodium potassium pump, which uses ATP to push three sodium ions out for every two potassium ions it brings in. The gradient it builds underlies membrane potential, nerve and muscle signaling, and the control of cell volume. This animation follows one full cycle of the pump.
